Helena Outdoor Club Upcoming Events

Weekend events are updated regularly. If fees are mentioned, they typically cover group lodging costs such as Forest Service cabin, condo, motel, campsite fees, etc.. Food is usually separate and we often share meals. (Note: you'll find a list of day trips in our monthly newsletters.)

Whereas the public is more than welcome to join us on any of these trips, we reserve the right to give priority to Helena Outdoor Club members. If you are not a HOC member, we'll put you on a waiting list until the deadline and if there is still room then, you may join the group. You may, of course, become a member now and secure your spot immediately. The HOC's cancellation policy applies to all events. Contact the leader for details.

Memorial Day Weekend, Friday-Monday, May 24-27: Blackfoot River camping & kayak trip. Based on water flows, JoAnne will pick two different stretches of the river to float each day. For intermediate kayakers. Leaving late on Friday afternoon, we'll set up camp at River Bend Campground for two nights. Call JoAnne (449-7971) for details and to register.

Saturday-Wednesday, June 1-5: Exporatory Petroglyph and Pictograph adventure.. We'll start by driving to Pictograph State Park, 5 miles south of Billings, and we'll camp one night at the KOA campground. Next we'll visit Pompey's Pillar, followed by a drive to Castle Butte and Steamboat Butte. We'll enter the Pryor Mountains in search of Petroglyph Canyon and Weatherman Draw (Valley of the Shields). We'll spend 2-3 nights at a Bridger motel or at a BLM campground (group will decide). Leaving at 8:00 am on Saturday. Call Tim or Jan (442-1619) for details and to register.

Saturday-Tuesday, June 15-18: Sluice Box Ghost Town and Wolf Butte Hikes. On Saturday we'll drive to Logging Creek Bridge over Belt Creek near Monarch, MT and hike 1.5 miles into Sluice Boxes State Park to the abandoned smelter and ghost town of Albright. We'll camp at Logging Creek Campground. On Sunday we'll take the Hughesville scenic backroads to Dry Wolf Cabin which we rented for two nights. Cabin space is limited but tenters are welcome. On Monday we'll embark on an unusual 5-mile exploratory hike of Wolf Butte, scrambling up a steep slope and finding our way to the top. With an elevation gain/loss of 1,900 ft. this is a fairly strenuous hike that will take 6 hours at a relaxed pace. On the summit we'll be treated to magnificent Central Montana views of at least half a dozen mountain ranges. Call Tim or Jan (442-1619) for trip details and to register.
