Helena Outdoor Club Upcoming Events

Weekend events are updated regularly. If fees are mentioned, they typically cover group lodging costs such as Forest Service cabin, condo, motel, campsite fees, etc.. Food is usually separate and we often share meals. (Note: you'll find a list of day trips in our monthly newsletters.)

Whereas the public is more than welcome to join us on any of these trips, we reserve the right to give priority to Helena Outdoor Club members. If you are not a HOC member, we'll put you on a waiting list until the deadline and if there is still room then, you may join the group. You may, of course, become a member now and secure your spot immediately. The HOC's cancellation policy applies to all events. Contact the leader for details.

MLK weekend, (Friday), Saturday-Monday, January (13), 14-16: downhill ski at Lost Trail & XC ski/ snowshoe at Chief Joseph Pass and Lake Como. We've rented a lovely vacation home for 2 nights for 10 people near Conner, 16 mi. north of Lost Trail ski area. Lodging plus 2 delightful family-style dinners is $70/person. If more people join us, they can stay at the nearby Rocky Knob Lodge. Make your own motel reservation (406-821-3520) and add $14/person for 2 apres-ski delights & dinners with the group. Some of us may want to travel on Friday and reserve a room for an additional night at the Rocky Knob Lodge. Call Jan (442-1619) to register and make dinner, room sharing & car pooling arrangements.

Friday-Sunday, January 27-29: XC ski or snowshoe in the East Pioneers, Canyon Creek area, where there are lots of silver mine relics, ghost towns and well-preserved old charcoal kilns. We'll spend 2 nights at the Sportsman Motel in Melrose, 40 mi. S. of Butte (make your own reservations, 406-835-2141). We have reserved the small Canyon Creek FS cabin to use as our warming & lunch hut on Saturday. Contact Jan (442-1619) to register and make meal, room sharing & car pooling arrangements.

Friday-Sunday, February 3-5: stay in a yurt and XC ski on groomed trails around Homestake Lodge (near Butte), or beyond. We've reserved a cozy, magical yurt in the middle of a meadow for 2 nights. It sleeps 6 people and you may reserve your bed for either one or two nights. Cost: $15/night. If there are extra people, dormitory-style bunk beds may be rented at the Lodge itself for $20/night (reserve that sleeping space by calling 406-585-8052). Bring sleeping bag & pillow. Trail fee for using the extensive, well-groomed XC ski trails on the property: $15/day. Mount Haggin XC ski trails are fairly close as is the Discovery Ski Area for those who would like to downhill ski on one of the days. Meal arrangements will be made later. Call Monique (495-9206) for details and to register.

President's Day Weekend, Friday-Monday, February 17-20: downhill ski at Lookout Pass (on the MT-ID border) and XC ski/snowshoe on nearby trails. Join us at the historic Savenac Cookhouse in Lolo NF for 4 days and 3 nights, located only 10 miles from Lookout Pass and close to Hiawatha & other trails. It has electricity, a huge kitchen, bathrooms & showers, and sleeps 9 people on twin beds. Bring sleeping bag & pillow. Cost for 3 nights including 3 family-style dinners is $50. Bring your own breakfasts & lunches. Call MaryAlice (495-8787) for details and to register.

Friday-Sunday (Monday), March 2-4 (5): XC ski or snowshoe near Glacier NP. If East Glacier has good snow this year, we plan on a weekend trip to this winter wonderland for 2 nights with an option to spend an extra night & day (Monday). As we have done in previous years, we would rent a vacation home or stay in a motel. There are several nice trails in the area, some well-suited for intermediate back country skiers, other easier ones for classic XC skiing or snowshoeing. Location and cost for lodging & meals will be decided later. Call Jan (442-1619) to sign up for this potential trip and get more details.

Tuesday-Thursday, March 6-8: XC ski trip to West Yellowstone. We'll be staying 2 nights at the beautiful Stagecoach Inn (make your own reservation, 406-646-7381). We'll prepare meals in our room & eat them in the lobby, or eat out. Nearby XC ski trails include one north of West Yellowstone and the Madison River ski trails, both inside the Park, as well as the extensive, groomed Rendezvous Ski Trails ($8/day pass). Contact Joyce or Bill K. (457-8246) for details, to register and make meal, room sharing & car pooling arrangements.
